For those who bear a Sak Yant, the annual Wai Kru ceremony is the most important date of the year — a chance to show gratitude to the masters of the lineage and, by tradition, to recharge the sacred power of the yants already inked on the skin.
The Meaning of Wai Kru
Sak Yant is a discipline with a "kru" — a teacher. Everyone who receives a yant is considered a disciple entrusted to the lineage. The Wai Kru ceremony is thus an act of remembrance for the masters both departed and living, a moment to ask forgiveness for any offence one may have caused, and to receive blessings for good fortune.
What Is Krob Kru?
The highlight of the Wai Kru festival is the Krob Kru rite, in which the master lays his hands or a sacred master's yant cloth upon each disciple's head while reciting the governing katha. By tradition this awakens the power of the yant and makes it stronger still. Some disciples may fall into a trance — "khong khuen" — channelling the spirit of the yant inked on their skin, a familiar sight at the great Wai Kru gatherings.
