"Does Sak Yant hurt?" is the question first-timers ask most. The honest answer: it hurts, but it is bearable — and how much depends on several factors, from the placement and the tattooing technique to each person's own body.
Placement and Pain Levels
The gentler placements are those cushioned by thick muscle — the shoulders, upper arms and upper back. The more painful ones are where the skin runs thin over bone, such as the ribs, the spine and the nape of the neck. First-timers are therefore advised to begin with the shoulder or upper back.
Does Oil Sak Yant Really Hurt Less?
It does. With an oil yant the needle works at a shallower depth than an ink tattoo — the sensation is closer to a light prick against the skin, and many say it is far gentler than they expected. That is why those wary of pain, or receiving their first yant, often begin with oil.
Techniques to Ease the Pain
Rest well, eat before your session, and avoid alcohol and heavy doses of caffeine beforehand. During the tattooing, breathe slowly and deeply, settle into meditation and hold the sacred in mind — intention and faith will carry you through smoothly.
